Frequently Asked Questions
What Makes Your Approach Different?
We consider ourselves more than “grant writers” - we become partners in your mission. Our approach is personal, collaborative, and strategic. Instead of just submitting applications, we work side by side with you to craft powerful narratives, budgets, and supporting documents that authentically reflect your organization’s story and impact. At the same time, we strengthen your internal capacity so you’re not only winning funding today, but also building long-term sustainability for tomorrow.
Why Hire a Grant Writer?
Nonprofits often struggle with two major challenges: finding the right grants and finding the time to apply. Applications can be short and straightforward - or stretch to 60+ pages! We’ve seen it all! Without dedicated staff, this process can feel overwhelming, if not impossible.
Our skilled grant writers bring the expertise, strategy, time, and focus to the table. They know where to look, how to position your organization, and how to present your case persuasively. More than just saving time, hiring a grant writer, Fractional Growth Officer, or business plan writer, gives your nonprofit more clarity, organization, and a new competitive edge.
Do You Work with Organizations of All Sizes?
We partner with organizations across the full spectrum of development - from emerging startups to established institutions - customizing our approach to align with your unique needs and capacity. For growing organizations, we focus on building grant readiness while simultaneously pursuing foundational funding opportunities. For established organizations, we ensure all submissions reflect your brand standards and leverage our expertise in complex federal grants and comprehensive multi-year funding strategies.
What Geographic Areas Do You Serve?
We serve nonprofit organizations throughout North America, with a focus on the western and midwestern United States. While we don't work directly with international nonprofits, we are happy to connect you with our trusted referral partner who specializes in global organizations.
What is the Typical Timeline for Receiving a Grant?
The timeline varies significantly depending on the funder. If it is not explicitly stated on their website, we can either call them or guestimate that:
Foundation grants: 3-9 months from submission to decision
Government grants: 4-9 months from submission to award notification
Corporate grants: 1-6 months from submission to decision
After notification, it may take an additional 1-2 months to receive the actual funds. Grant funding requires patience and is typically for programs and projects.
What Types of Grantmakers Are There?
The main types of grant-makers out there, including:
Private foundations (established by individuals, families, or corporations)
Community foundations (serving specific geographic areas)
Corporate foundations and giving programs
Government agencies (federal, state, and local)
Public charities with grantmaking programs
Donor-advised funds
Each grant-maker has distinct priorities, application processes, and expectations. We help you navigate these differences and develop tailored approaches for each funder type.
How Many Revisions Are Included in Your Service?
Our service includes three rounds of revisions to ensure your grant application exceeds expectations. Whether you prefer a collaborative, hands-on approach or trust us to take the lead, we weave together your organization's unique story, program outcomes, and innovative solutions while strategically addressing every funder requirement.
Do You Work on Commission?
In short, NO. While this might seem like an appealing option, here’s why it isn’t ideal:
It’s Unethical: Commission-based payment models violate professional standards, such as the Grant Professionals Association (GPA) and AFP Code of Ethics. It also usually goes against the written budgets proposed to the grant-makers, causing deceit on the nonprofits part.
Work Product vs. Outcome: You’re paying for the creation of a compelling proposal—not for guaranteed funding outcomes (which are influenced by many factors outside the writer’s control).
Risky for Grant Writers: If your grant isn’t funded, the writer doesn’t get paid despite investing significant time and effort into crafting the proposal—a risk that isn’t sustainable for professionals in this field.
